Australian Postgraduate Award - APA

The Australian Postgraduate Award, funded by the Australian Government, is available to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens only. Award holders receive an annual stipend paid fortnightly and may also be eligible for allowances, such as a relocation allowance and a thesis allowance.

To be eligible for an APA, applicants must:

  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen
  • have completed at least four years of tertiary education study
  • have obtained First Class Honours or equivalent results
  • be undertaking a research masters, PhD or professional doctorate, and
  • intend to be enrolled as a full-time student upon commencement of the award or, in exceptional circumstances, be granted approval for a part-time award.

Applicants are ineligible for an APA if they:

  • are international students
  • hold a PhD or professional doctorate
  • intend to undertake a second research masters degree
  • have previously held and Australian government-funded postgraduate research scholarship (eg APA formerly known as APRA/CPRA) unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship's payments commencing or
  • are currently receiving another equivalent award, scholarship or salary to undertake the research higher degree, providing a benefit greater than 75% of the APA stipend rate.

An award may be made available for enrolment as a research candidate under Monash's external mode regulations, however, the support of the relevant academic unit and faculty will be required.  The awardee must also reside in Australia.
