Research Training Scheme

Formula

Funding to universities for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) places/load from 2002 has been distributed on a competitive basis according to the following formula:

  • 50% completions (all completions- Australian and international students)

  • 40% research income

  • 10% publications

Funding for research masters and doctoral places

The university will receive:

  • up to 2 years full-time equivalent funding for a research masters (previously 3 years) and

  • up to 4 years full-time equivalent funding for doctoral studies (previously 5 years)

Provision for out-of-time students

A candidate who exceeds these periods of RTS funding support will normally be fee-waived as any completion feeds into the formula and potentially contributes to the university's subsequent RTS funding allocation.
