Postgraduate Research Orientation

Ready for Research

Congratulations on your enrolment at Monash University and welcome to the Monash research community. Monash is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight universities and we are continuing to build Monash as one of the worlds finest research - led universities.

Higher Degree by Research candidates make a significant contribution to Monash's research output, and we are committed to providing you with a first rate research experience and skill development programs to ensure our mutual success.

To assist with your integration in to both the University, and in the case of international students, Australian life, Monash has developed a structured program of orientation activities conducted each semester.

The services,facilities and resources available to HDR students differ markedly from those available to other student cohorts, so attendance is strongly recommended for all HDR students irrespective of whether you have studied at Monash previously or not.

Central

At a central level, The Monash Research Graduate School in association with the Monash Postgraduate Association coordinate University wide orientation sessions for all HDR students. Researchers will be officially welcomed to the University, and the role and responsibility of the MRGS outlined including information on grievance and appeals processes.

Staff from key service providers such as the Library and Health Wellbeing and Development will also present overviews of both the academic and non academic support services available at the University.

Faculty

Further information is provided through a wide range of complimentary Faculty/Departmental Orientation sessions.

Faculty orientation sessions will provide more detailed information on key faculty research requirements such as confirmation, mid -candidature reviews and pre submission presentations. These sessions may also provide information on facilities and services such as any faculty seminar/workshop series, social activities and introduce you to key faculty personnel and subject librarians.

Department

Some Departments also hold orientation sessions for new HDR students. These sessions cover important information best discussed at the local level. Departments are best placed to assist student to engage with their new intellectual community and to induct candidates into their academic workplace. For some students this will include Occupational Health and Safety information for those conducting research in studios or laboratories.

All of the above sessions offer research candidates an opportunity to meet candidates and research staff from within their discipline area, and in the case of the central sessions, from across the University.

The creation of professional and social networks promotes a sense of belonging and assists the process of academic engagement - all of which can help in the timely completion of the research thesis and the development of your research career. We strongly encourage you to participate in each level of the orientation process.
