Disestablishment of Doctor of Information Technology
Former policy
The Doctor of Information Technology has been disestablished with effect from 1 January 2009 and will not be available for candidates in the future. The guidelines below have been removed from the Handbook for Doctoral and MPhil Degrees:
1.6.5 Doctor of Information Technology (DIT)
This program, offered through the Faculty of Information Technology, combines coursework and a 66% research component and may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis.
2.1.9 Doctor of Information Technology (DIT)
To be eligible for admission, prospective applicants must hold:
- a masters degree by research, or
- a degree of bachelor with honours class I or class II, division A in a field of information technology, or
- a a masters degree by coursework in an IT field which includes a research methods unit and a minor thesis, equivalent to honours 1 or honours IIA, and
- have completed satisfactorily at Monash or another educational institution at least one unit in statistics or research methods, or
- have other qualifications or qualifications and experience which are considered by the Research Graduate School Committee to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above.
In addition applicants should normally have had at least two years of professional experience in a field of information technology.
2.2.2.6 DIT
Subject to the general provisions specified in 2.2.2 above, credit may be granted where the relevant faculty committee is satisfied that a candidate has completed work equivalent to particular coursework units in a study program. Credit will not be granted, however, for more than 50% of the program’s coursework units.
2.10.3 DIT
All candidates are admitted to probationary candidature in the first instance. Candidature will be confirmed subject to the receipt of a satisfactory report of progress at the end of the first full-time equivalent year.
3.9.1.2 Mandatory coursework
Where a mandatory coursework component has been undertaken as an integral part of the degree structure (some PhD and MPhil programs, the EdD, DPH, DPsych, DBA, DIT and SJD), this component must be completed successfully before the thesis is dispatched to the examiners for assessment. The nature and duration of such coursework will be notified to the examiners when they are sent the thesis.
3.9.1.10 DIT
Students undertake four core coursework units, a seminar and four additional elective units. The coursework comprises 33% of the overall program, or 24 credit points.
