Policy changes
Candidature extension (Chapter 4.2)
Revised policy approved by Research Graduate School Committee at Meeting 4/2005 (6 May 2005).
Former policy
Part-time candidates
An extension of candidature will normally only be considered where research has been delayed by circumstances beyond the candidate's control, for example equipment breakdown, change in research direction, change in supervision, inadequate library or other resources, or illness of candidate.
Initially, extensions of up to three months may be approved, with the possibility of a further three months after a second application. Extensions beyond six months, for both full-time and part-time candidates, will not normally be granted. A request for extension should be accompanied by a timetable for completion.
Application forms are available from Monash Research Graduate School.

Extensions beyond six months will not normally be granted to full-time students. Part-time students may apply for up to a maximum of 12 months extension to candidature, but applications must be lodged in three monthly blocks, providing evidence of effective progress throughout the period of extension. Where students have converted from full-time to part-time candidature at a date subsequent to their commencement of candidature, the possible period of 12 months (part-time) extension will be decreased on a pro-rata basis. Students who have had 3.5 years of full-time candidature (or more) will be eligible for a maximum of six months extension. A request for extension should be accompanied by a timetable for completion.
Application forms are available from Monash Research Graduate School.
