Overview of the doctoral examination process

It is strongly recommended that research candidates and academic and administrative staff consult the Doctoral information handbook prior to and during the examination.

Chapter 7: Thesis and examination matters outlines each stage of the examination process and suggests courses of action where problems are experienced.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) examination

The subject / other components of the program must be completed before the thesis is submitted.

Doctoral examination procedures shall normally apply, including those procedures which operate in the event that there is a difference of opinion between examiners. A difference is that one of the two examiners may be internal to Monash University.

For use by former doctoral and MPhil candidates who completed a study program for a degree but did not submit a thesis within the period of candidature. The Research Graduate School Committee may allow a former candidate under Regulation 18.2 to submit a thesis within three years of the end of candidature.

Participation in meetings of advisory panels

Academic staff may wish to participate in meetings of advisory panels in order to satisfy a requirement of the university's Research Supervisor Training Program.

Appointment as Junior Honorary Research Associate

A recommendation for appointment as a Junior Honorary Research Associate may be made where there is a demonstrated need for continuing use of Monash University facilities during the period of the examination.

Examples of this need are where a candidate holds a Postgraduate Publication Award or requires use of university libraries to facilitate preparation of papers arising from material in the thesis.

The Application for ID only (word) is to be used for appointing a research student under examination to the position of Junior Honorary Research Associate. Junior Honorary Research Associates should be classed as Honorary or Affiliate/Associate depending on circumstances (if unsure check with Personnel Services).

The appointment to the position of Junior Honorary Research Associate is a fixed term appointment for an initial period of no longer than six months. The appointee is entitled to a Monash University Staff identity card and access to such facilities as may ordinarily be accessed with a staff identity card. There is no salary entitlement with this appointment.

Postgraduate Publication Awards (PPA) Scheme

The Postgraduate Publication Awards (PPA) Scheme provides a modest income to authors during the preparation of articles and books which are based on their theses submitted for a research degree.
