Thesis Examination: Insertion of Amendments
If you have to make minor amendments to your thesis, you will be asked by the Examinations Unit to collect your thesis copies and insert amendments into the copies.
Typographical Errors
These may be inserted as a list of errata and pasted into the blank pages at the front of each copy. For example:
ERRATA
p 30 para 2, last sentence: “It is not known” for “It not known”
p 67 section (e), 5th line: “mediator’s” for “mediators”
p 114 point (ix): space between “of” and “their”
Other styles of errata may be used; the most important considerations are appropriateness to your thesis style and consistency.
Amendments
If these are extensive and cannot be accommodated within the space of a few pages, the changes need to be made within the text and the thesis reprinted.
If there are three or fewer pages of amendments, these can generally be pasted onto the blank pages at the front of each copy. Please leave the first right-hand page of the thesis blank for insertion of the award of degree certificate. For more than three pages, the binding company should be consulted. However, judicious use of font size and spacing may help to minimise the quantity of extra pages to be inserted. Amendments may include single lines and sentences, for example:
ADDENDUM
p 26 line 18: delete “which” and read “However, other studies have failed to show…”
p 69 para 1: Comment: Samples were measured by threshold differentiation; measurementswere obtained as optical densities in outlined regions using standard microscales against a blank background.
p 142: Add at the end of para 1:
“It would be of interest also to compare the oxygen consumption of muscles from control and diabetic animals to determine whether there is some general overall inhibition of metabolism in the latter”.
Entire paragraphs and tables/maps/diagrams (where practical) may also be included in the addendum.
Thermal Bound Thesis Copies
If thermal bound copies have been submitted for examination, any required changes would normally be incorporated into the text. However, an errata may be used if preferred. New copies, at least one of which should be in hard covers, or two for Faculty of Education candidates, should be returned to the Monash Research Graduate School before the award of degree can be considered.
It should be noted that these methods of inserting changes are not necessarily suitable in every case; the Monash Research Graduate School should be contacted if more advice is required.
