Chapter 4: Changes to candidature

4.2 Extension of candidature

An extension of candidature will normally only be considered where research has been delayed by circumstances beyond the candidate's control, for example equipment breakdown, change in research direction, change in supervision, inadequate library or other resources, or illness of candidate. Employment commitments are not considered outside the control of the candidate and cannot be used as a reason for extending candidature.

Evidence of effective progress throughout the period of extension must be provided to support an extension of candidature beyond the initial extension period. Where a candidate has had a period of full-time and part-time enrolment, the maximum extension time is calculated on a pro-rata basis. A request for extension should be accompanied by a detailed statement of delays to the research project and timetable for completion.

Application forms are available from Monash Research Graduate School.

PhD candidates

Extensions of up to six months may be approved. Extensions beyond six months will not normally be granted to full-time candidates. Part-time candidates may apply for up to a maximum of 12 months extension to candidature, but applications for extensions will initially be granted for six months, with a possibility of up to a further two extensions of three months each. Candidates who have had three and one half years of full-time candidature (or more) will only be eligible for a maximum of six months extension.

MPhil candidates

Extensions of up to three months may be approved to full-time candidates. Part-time candidates may apply for up to six months extension to candidature. Extensions beyond this period will be on a case-by-case basis.
