Chapter 3: Conditions of candidature

3.7 Confirmation of candidature

All probationary candidates are required to present their work in progress to a review panel and submit a confirmation of candidature report at the end of their probationary period.

The confirmation report, which is forwarded to candidates two months before the confirmation of candidature is due, will require candidates to describe the progress of their work and to note any problems or obstacles encountered. The report is to be prepared in consultation with the supervisor, who together with the head of the relevant department or unit must endorse the report. The report also requires faculty endorsement.

Guidelines and procedures for confirmation of candidature, along with appeal processes where non-confirmation is recommended, are documented in Appendix D. Where a candidate is not successful in confirming his/her candidature, the candidate will normally not be readmitted within four years of the non-confirmation date. The Research Graduate School Committee will only approve readmission following this exclusion period where suitable facilities and effective supervision are available to support the candidature and where the Research Graduate School Committee is satisfied that the candidate is now in a position to undertake research towards a successful thesis completion. The Committee may request certification by a registered medical practitioner that a former candidate is now in a position to resume candidature.
