Chapter 3: Conditions of candidature

3.5 Study off-campus

Candidates may be permitted in certain circumstances to pursue a part of their research at other institutions and locations outside the University. In such cases, the Research Graduate School Committee will need to be satisfied that the period of study away is an integral and essential part of the research, that adequate arrangements for supervision are in place and that the facilities available are at least equal to those offered on-campus.

In the case of doctoral candidates, a maximum period of 12 months may be approved by the Research Graduate School Committee, although in very exceptional circumstances this may be extended to 18 months. In absences longer than six months, six-monthly reports will be required. Candidates are required to maintain regular contact with their supervisor while on approved study away. An external advisor may also be appointed.

In the case of MPhil candidates, approval may be given for a limited period of off-campus study, normally not exceeding six months in total. Either the candidate’s supervisor(s) or a specially appointed external advisor, or both, shall oversee the MPhil candidate’s work during such periods of off-campus study and research.

Application procedures for study away are discussed in section 4.3.
