Chapter 2: Admission to doctoral & MPhil candidature

2.2 Credit provision for PhD, professional doctorates and MPhil degrees

There is no credit provision for research components in doctoral and MPhil programs.

2.2.1 PhD programs

2.2.1.1 PhD in the speciality of visual arts

The first two coursework units (research methods and theory workshops) are dual-listed doctoral and masters units. Candidates who have completed the Master in Fine Arts and are admitted to the PhD in visual arts may obtain credit in respect of those two units.

2.2.1.2 PhD in the speciality of music composition

There is no credit provision.

2.2.2 Professional doctorates

Credit will not be given for work completed more than 10 years prior to admission to doctoral candidature, nor for more than 50% of the coursework. Credit will not be given for coursework credited to another degree or diploma.

2.2.2.1 EdD

The guidelines specified in 2.2.2 apply.

2.2.2.2 DPsych

Subject to the general provisions specified in 2.2.2 above, the faculty board may give credit for coursework and/or supervised practice already completed and equivalent to particular units and practical work. Appropriate methods for assessment of equivalence of prior study will include a viva voce, written examination, submission of referees' reports and/or presentation of written work. No credit will be given for elective units. A minimum enrolment period of two years will apply to all later-year applicants.

2.2.2.3 DPH

Subject to the general provisions specified in 2.2.2 above, the Medicine Nursing & Health Sciences faculty board may grant credit provision for candidates who have completed coursework and/or supervised practice of equivalent standing, up to a maximum of three units. Appropriate methods for assessment of equivalence of prior study will include a viva voce, written examination, submission of referees' reports and/or presentation of written work. No credit will be given for elective units. A minimum enrolment period of two years will apply to all later-year applicants.

2.2.2.4 DBA

Subject to the general provisions specified in 2.2.2 above, credit may be granted where the DBA Committee is satisfied that a candidate has completed work equivalent to particular coursework units in a study program. Credit will not be granted, however, for more than 50% of the program's coursework units.

2.2.2.5 SJD

Candidates who have obtained a distinction-level average in four Monash LLM coursework masters units, together with distinctions in research assignments submitted in each of them, may have credit for those units, provided they have not been counted towards any other degree.

2.2.2.6 DIT

Subject to the general provisions specified in 2.2.2 above, credit may be granted where the relevant faculty committee is satisfied that a candidate has completed work equivalent to particular coursework units in a study program. Credit will not be granted, however, for more than 50% of the program’s coursework units.

2.2.3 MPhil degree

No credit transfer may be given for previously completed research.

Up to 50% credit may be considered with respect to the coursework component where:

  • the student has gained at least an HIIA or distinction grade in the relevant unit
  • the unit was a genuine fifth-year-level unit in the same or a cognate discipline, and
  • the unit did not constitute a component of an already-completed degree.

Work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature will not normally be credited. In those cases where a student is transferring his/her candidature from another institution, the extent of credit transfer will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

For those enrolled by external mode, any coursework component would normally be pursued on-campus, unless such units by online or off-campus learning mode are approved by the Research Graduate School Committee following a submission by the relevant faculty.
