Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS)

Purpose of the Scheme

The Australian Government offers awards to help higher degree by research students develop research commercialisation and intellectual property management skills.

The intended outcomes of the Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) are to:

  • Enable Australia’s next generation of researchers to better understand the commercial potential of research and better plan research activities in order to achieve commercial benefit
  • Enhance the career outcomes of HDR students
  • Provide a more highly skilled and valued research workforce for employers
  • Generate flow-on benefits to the broader Australian community through the enhanced delivery of innovative research-based products and services.

Program of Study

Monash provides CTS training through a one semester (four month) full-time equivalent course: the Graduate Certificate in Commercialising Research, offered by the Graduate School of Business as on-campus mode at the Caulfield campus.

The 24-credit point program consists of four units each of six points, these include:

GSB9100 Research Commercialisation Planning
BTX9120 Intellectual property Law
MGX9600 Managing people and organisations

and one of:

AFX9004 New venture Financing and Accounting  OR
MKX9160 Foundations of Marketing

The certificate course will focus on three areas:

  1. Commercialisation Know-how: students will gain an understanding of commercialisation processes and activities commonly employed to bring research based ideas, inventions and innovations to the market.
  2. Technical Commercialisation Skills: students will gain a comprehensive understanding of relevant technical commercialisation subject areas. Intellectual Property Management is a core area of learning, together with financial management, project management and market research.
  3. Organisational Behaviour Skills: students will gain a comprehensive understanding of subject areas that cover interpersonal and communication skills relevant to research commercialisation activities including leadership, teamwork and presentation skills.
