     4.   PhD Project Experimental Neuropsychology/Neuroscience

The Experimental Neuropsychology Research Unit, School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine, under the Directorship of Associate Professor Nellie Georgiou-Karistianis, is seeking a PhD student to conduct a project on characterizing cognitive and motor signatures in different sub-types of Parkinson's disease. This is important for drug development so we can target drugs for specific symptomatology's rather than trying to treat the disease as a whole. The project will involve liaising with neurologists, testing of individuals with and without Parkinson's disease, operating experimental computerized tasks, statistical analyses and thesis preparation in the form of publications. The group is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, and organised individual who can work well in a team and can lead this new initiative in 2010.

Date: Thursday 15 October to Friday 18 December, 2009
    Venue: Clayton
    RSVP: 18 December 2009

      5.   Google Book Settlement - important advice to student authors

The Google Book Settlement (‘the Settlement') is relevant to any Monash staff or students who have authored and published works prior to January 2009.

The Google Book Settlement is an out-of-court settlement that resulted from a class action filed by a consortium of copyright holder groups in America on behalf of American authors and publishers for copyright infringement by Google. Though the class action was decided in America it nevertheless affects and applies to all authors and publishers worldwide.

All Monash authors are advised to go to the Settlement website, register as an author and search for their works on the Settlement book registry. The Settlement website and the book registry can be accessed through this link: http://www.googlebooksettlement.com.

You need to read the advice presented on the University's Copyrightwebsite at:

http://www.copyright.monash.edu.au/googlebooksettlement.html  (and also linked from the 'Latest' box on the copyright website homepage) and take appropriate action before the deadlines set out, as follows:

    1. By September 4, 2009 - owners wishing to opt out of the Settlement must do so before this date. The default position (if one does nothing) is that an author/publisher is automatically ‘in' the Settlement. Note that opting out of the Settlement does not stop Google from scanning or making use of your work. Opting out means that you intend to pursue your own case against Google through the American court system.
    2. By January 5, 2010 - owners of works already scanned must claim their works before this date to receive the fixed damages payment on offer through the Settlement.
    3. By April 5, 2011 -  owners of works who remain in the Settlement but wish to have their works ‘removed' from the Google books database must have claimed their works and requested removal before this date.

The Settlement website also has a list of FAQs at http://www.googlebooksettlement.com/help/bin/answer.py?answer=134644&hl=en

For further details and advice please go to http://www.copyright.monash.edu.au/googlebooksettlement.html

    6.    Email Accounts & Computer Services

As a Research student at Monash, you are granted an AUTHCATE account (consisting of username and password) that you may use to access IT facilities.  It provides access to electronic services on the internet such as email, My.Monash, the library WebCT and the Web Enrolment System (WES).  Your student email account is one of the main sources of communication between you and the university and you are expected to check it at least weekly.  If you have also been allocated a Faculty email account or you use a non-Monash email account you MUST arrange to have your student email account linked to this account.

    1.    How to link Email Accounts (must be done via Modzilla Firefox not Internet Explorer)

Follow the instructions on the following ITS website - to forward your email:  http://www.its.monash.edu.au/students/email/about.html#forward

    2.    About your Email

You are automatically allocated a Monash email account once you have your computer account. Monash uses web-based email systems, which allow you to access your Monash emails from anywhere in the world.

Your email address takes the form: Authcateusername@student.monash.edu.au. For instance, if your name is John Citizen, your Authcate username is jcit1, and your email address will be jcit1@student.monash.edu.

This is the official Monash address that the university will use to communicate electronically with you. The university does not record or send to non-Monash email addresses.

The largest file you can send or receive using Monash WebMail is 5MB

    3.    Enhanced Computing Services

Information regarding enhanced computing services for postgraduate research students can be found on the following ITS website: http://www.its.monash.edu.au/students/pgresearch/
