7. Research Program Grants in Cancer Pharmacogenomics Commencing in 2010
Cancer Council NSW wishes to support research teams in overcoming current barriers to the effectiveness of cancer chemotherapy. These are considered to involve inadequate understanding of:
- differences between patients in their handling of specific chemotherapeutic agents, leading to ineffective or excessive dosing; and
- differences between tumour types and between individual tumours of the same type in their sensitivity to specific agents.
The purpose of the Research Program Grant in Cancer Pharmacogenomics is to develop teams with expertise in:
- genetic and pharmacodynamic analysis of cancer chemotherapy drug metabolism
- characterisation of the genetic determinants in tumours that influence drug sensitivity and resistance.
Applications will only be considered from groups:
- whose research will be focussed primarily on patients affected by cancer and on human tumour material,
- that are inherently multidisciplinary, i.e. they routinely entrain a range of clinical and research disciplines in research and problem solving, and
- that have research skills and capacity in pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics that can and will be applied to cancer.
Applications that do not meet the above criteria will not be considered and priority will be given to proposals that address chemotherapy that is relevant to common cancers.
The Research Program Grant in Cancer Pharmacogenomics will be funded for five years from January 2010 and will provide support of up to $300,000 p.a.
HOW TO APPLY
1. Notify the Cancer Council NSW by Friday 17 April 2009 (e-mail rong@nswcc.org.au) of your intention to apply for a Research Program Grant in Cancer Pharmacogenomics and your interest and availability to attend a briefing for potential applicants later in April.

11. Smuts Visiting Fellowship in Commonwealth Studies 2010-2011
Applications are invited for one or two Smuts Visiting Fellowships in Commonwealth Studies in association with a Visiting Fellowship at Wolfson College to be held during the academic year 2010-2011.
Fellowships are available for research in the field of Commonwealth Studies, including the Commonwealth related aspects of archaeology, anthropology, economics, history, human geography, law, literature, oriental studies, sociology, politics and social psychology. The maximum duration of a Fellowship is nine months, beginning in October 2010, but the Managers would be willing to consider applications requiring less time in Cambridge. Fellowship holders are expected to live in Cambridge for the bulk of their tenure and accommodation is normally offered by Wolfson College. Fellows are expected to advance Commonwealth Studies in Cambridge mainly by pursuing research, but also by taking part in seminars and similar activities within the University. Fellows will have access, by agreement, to the holdings of Faculty and Departmental libraries, to the libraries of the Centres of African Studies and South Asian Studies and to the University Library, which houses the extensive collection of materials relating to the history of the British Empire and Commonwealth formerly housed in the Royal Commonwealth Society Library in London.
Fellows will receive a contribution towards their expenses of £39,920 per annum pro rata for a nine month stay (taken from the 1 October 2008 pay scales). This sum may be reduced to the extent that the Fellow receives income from another source or if the duration of the Fellowship is less than nine months. The contribution to expenses is subject to tax and National Insurance in the UK. However, depending on personal circumstances it may be eligible for Tax exemption following assessment from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. A further sum of up to £6,000 is available towards travel and related costs for a nine month stay. The Managers are not, however, able to provide additional sums for the travel or living expenses of anyone accompanying the Fellow to Cambridge.
Applicants should be members of staff of another University or similar institution outside the UK. They should hold a PhD or, if not, be working at a post-doctoral level. The Managers will give preference to scholars with a distinguished research profile who are nationals or permanent residents of the overseas countries of the Commonwealth and who have active research interests in an area or areas of scholarship falling within the remit of the Smuts Fund as specified above. The Managers expect that applicants would be intending to come to Cambridge to work on a project building on existing research for which a period of residence in Cambridge is demonstrably appropriate, although they would not rule out the initiation of a new piece of work where there is a realistic expectation that it could be completed by the end of the tenure of the Fellowship.
Applicants should write or send an email to the Secretary, Smuts Memorial Fund, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RZ, UK, kfw20@admin.cam.ac.uk for an application package. Applicants should note that for security reasons neither applications nor references can be accepted via email and should make arrangements accordingly. The closing date for completed applications and references to be received in Cambridge is 27 August 2009 and applications received after this date will be declined. The Managers will appoint Fellows in November 2009 and all applicants will be notified of the result.

14. Go8 offers support to the University of L’Aquila
The Group of Eight today announced it will offer up to eight scholarships to early career researchers in the Italian city of L’Aquila to help them continue their research in Australia while the University of L’Aquila is rebuilt.
In the aftermath of the April 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila which claimed nearly 300 lives and left thousands injured, the university has virtually shut down. Fifty five of those who died were from the university’s 23,000-strong student body.
“Most of the university buildings are currently inaccessible and it will take at least 6-12 months before research staff and students will be allowed to access them,” said Professor Silvia Bisti, who holds a chair of neuroscience in L’Aquila’s Department of Biomedical Science and Technology.
“PhD students and postdoc fellows, particularly in the scientific fields, are the worst affected. The earthquake destroyed their laboratories, making continuation of their research almost impossible.”
Professor Anna Tozzi, PVC International Relationships at the University of L’Aquila, said “the Go8 contribution will make an enormous difference, providing not only practical help for researchers to continue their work but also hope for the community.”
The Go8 will offer eight one-off scholarships of $5000 each to early career researchers to travel to Australia and spend time conducting research at Go8 member universities.
The scholarships will be administered through the Association for Research between Italy and Australasia (ARIA) and applications will be assessed by an expert panel.
Eligible researchers are those currently enrolled in a research degree at the University of L’Aquila or full-time staff of the university. Preference will be given to PhD students and early career researchers.

21. Postgraduate Publications Award (PPA) Round 2/2009
The Postgraduate Publications Awards scheme is designed to encourage research degree candidates to disseminate their research findings to a wider public through publication in professional journals or books.
The scheme provides a modest income, equivalent to the APA rate, to authors during the preparation of articles and books, that are based on their theses submitted for a research degree. The scheme aims to discourage delays in thesis completion that may arise when research students take time out during their candidature to prepare papers for publication.
The Postgraduate Publications Award provides support for students who, having submitted their thesis, wish to write up some of their research for publication while they await the result of their examination. Thus the award is explicitly targeted at research degree candidates whose thesis is under examination. Accordingly, it is not intended to provide financial support to students who have not yet submitted their thesis or to former students whose thesis has been accepted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the research degree.
Eligibility
Postgraduate research students, who have submitted, or are about to submit, their thesis.
Eligible candidates are required to apply in the selection round which coincides with the submission date of their thesis. There are 4 selection rounds per year, which close on 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December. For each of the four selection rounds, the eligible thesis submission date lies within the three-months interval that begins one month before the closing date and ends two months after the closing date of the round:
