    1.1 Workshop 23: Powerpoint for advanced users

    Whether you have participated in the PowerPoint for Beginners workshop, or you have already accumulated skills in the software, this workshop will show you advanced techniques in how to formulate presentations. This workshop will take students through how to create and edit an organisation chart, add subordinates, and how to format organisation chart branches.

    1.2 Workshop 24: MS Word Advanced for thesis writing

    This is a hands-on workshop for experienced users of MS Word who are starting to write their theses. This workshop will cover using templates, using a master document, creating a table of contents, automatic cross-referencing and alternatives to master document.

    1.3 exPERT Replay -Confirmation of Candidature

    Pre-recorded session from 27 April 2005. Watch the DVD of this very successful session. Original seminar description below: All Postgraduate Research Students commencing studies from 2003 are initially enrolled on a probationary basis, and need to have their candidature confirmed after 12 months of study. In this seminar, representatives from the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Arts explain this process. An absolute "must see" seminar for all recently commenced Postgraduate Research Students.

    1.4 Session 7: Introduction to statistical tests

    Content: Normal distribution; confidence interval for mean; how statistical tests work; p-values; the t-test for paired data; power, size of test; sample size calculation

    1.5 Workshop 25: MS Word fundamentals for thesis writing

    This is a hands-on workshop and will introduce you to the features of MS Word to help you manage your thesis writing efficiently. It will cover efficient text entry techniques, use and management of styles, controlling page formatting through the use of section breaks, creating tables, captions, inserting pictures and graphs, how to create drawings and an introduction to equation editor.

    4. Scholarships, Fellowships and Grants

    4.1 Postgraduate Publication Awards (PPA)

    Closing Date: Monday, 30 June 2008 (Round 2)

    The Postgraduate Publications Awards scheme (formerly Postgraduate Writing Up Award) is designed to encourage research degree candidates to disseminate their research findings to a wider public through publication in professional journals or books.

    If you are submitting your thesis between 1 June and 31 August 2008 you should apply for Round 2.

    4.2 PhD Scholarship – ARMI/CSIRO/ASCC

    Closing Date: Tuesday 22 July 2008

    The Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute, CSIRO Molecular and Health Technologies and the Australian Stem Cell Centre are providing a PhD scholarship under the supervision of Professor Nadia Rosenthal (Director, ARMI), Drs Keith McLean and Jerome Werkmeister (CSIRO) and Professor Stephen Livesey (CEO, Australian Stem Cell Centre). The successful candidate will spend time in the ARMI, ASCC and CSIRO laboratories at Clayton, Victoria. The student will be enrolled at Monash University for the award of the doctoral degree.

    The scholarship will provide an opportunity to work with people who are leaders in their field, a total annual stipend of AUS$25,000, all tuition fees (if applicable) and financial support towards necessary travel and operating costs of the project and attendance at one international conference and associated laboratory visits including interaction with EMBL laboratories in Europe.

    4.4 Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law

    Closing Date: Sunday, 31 August 2008

    The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust in London, with the support of the Australian government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Menzies Foundation, offers to Australian postgraduate students two scholarships in Law, tenable in the United Kingdom commencing October, 2009.

    The scholarship includes return fares and substantial emoluments which are not subject to the United Kingdom income tax. It is tenable for one, two or three academic years.

    4.5 Kartomi PhD in Music Scholarship

    Closing Date: Applications will be available in mid 2008 and close Friday, 31 October 2008.

    The scholarship is available to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and international applicants who have completed a four year undergraduate, masters preliminary or masters degree at H1* level or equivalent and who propose to undertake a PhD in music.

    Scholarship period is 3 years full-time with an annual stipend of $26,640.

    4.6 The Bill Kent Prato Research Fellowship

    Closing Date: Monday, 30 June 2008

    Named after the Prato Centre’s Founding Director, this fellowship is available to early career researchers with a permanent or fixed term appointment at Monash University. The applicant must provide a rationale for being based at Prato, and identify benefits to their research and to Monash that would result. The fellowship may be taken up as part of an approved Outside Studies Program. Applications must receive Department and Faculty endorsement.

    4.7 Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Research Scholarship in the Applied Health Sciences

    Closing Date: Monday 30 June, 2008

    The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation wishes to stimulate research in the allied health sciences and is now offering up to three research scholarships in this field. The level of remuneration is $25,000 pa free of income tax. The award will be tenable at an Australian tertiary institution with adequate facilities for postgraduate research in the applicant’s discipline.

    4.8 Heart Foundation Postgraduate Scholarships (Biomedical, Clinical, Public Health)

    Closing Date: Friday 15 August, 2008

    The Heart foundation offers postgraduate research scholarships in Biomedical, clinical and Public Health disciplines. These scholarships are for nursing, medical, science and other relevant graduates seeking support for fulltime research studies leading to a PhD at an Australian university or institution. Scholarships are normally awarded for three years.

    4.9 The Australia-Israel Scientific Exchange Foundation Postgraduate Fellowship Award

    Closing Date: Friday 25 July, 2008

    The Foundation established an award for postgraduate students in Australia and Israeli universities to undertake part of their research for their PhD in matching institutions in Israel and Australia. The award, AU$5,000 for a period of up to six months, has been awarded to nearly a dozen Australian and Israeli students. The funds for this award have come from private donations.

    4.10 Fulbright Scholarships for Australians

    Closing Date: Sunday 31 August, 2008

    Each year, the Fulbright Commission offers approximately 20 scholarships to Australian citizens to study, lecture or undertake research in the US. Other scholarships are also available including the Fulbright New Century Scholar and the Fulbright Scholar in Residence Program.

    4.11 Monash Access Equity Postgraduate Research Travel Grant

    As part of the equity program, special travel grants are available for 2008, each up to a value of $3000 (depending upon destination and associated costs) for travel within Australia and overseas. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for these grants.

    Selection criteria may include:

    • Disability or long-term medical condition
    • Socio-economic disadvantage and/or
    • Adverse long-term family or domestic circumstances

    4.12 Postgraduate Research Travel Grant

    Postgraduate travel grants assist students who wish to attend conferences in order to present a paper or poster on their current research.

    4.13 National Archives Research Grants

    The National Archives of Australia offers a range of grants for advanced research and professional development.

    Frederick Watson Fellowship

    Closing Date: Friday 27 June, 2008

    $15,000 for established scholars. Eminent historians, established authors, senior academics, or high-profile public commentators may be eligible for this award.

    4.14 Australian Biological Resources Study – Student Travel Grant

    4.16 More Scholarship Information

    JASON (Joint Academic Scholarship On-line Network) –

    JASON is a national database exclusively concerned with collating information about a broad range of postgraduate scholarships.

    Website www.jason.edu.au

    The database includes scholarships offered by Australian and overseas universities, Federal and State Governments, foundations and private sector organisations, thus providing a valuable service to both students looking for scholarships and to the organizations awarding them.

    JASON is jointly funded by more than 30 Australian universities, including Monash University. The database is available free of charge to staff and students at Monash University.

    Students and staff are able to search the database for scholarships and other funding opportunities. They can also subscribe, and information about new scholarships in the relevant fields will be emailed to them as soon as they become available. These services can both be accessed at www.jason.edu.au.

    University staff are able to advertise postgraduate scholarships on the website. Scholarships can be submitted for inclusion on the database using the pro-forma which can be downloaded from the MRGS homepage at:

    5. Other forthcoming events, activities and initiatives

    5.1 Fifty books from fifty years: celebrating a half century of collecting

    This is an exhibition of fifty books chosen by Monash academics and researchers. It demonstrates the importance of the Monash University Library Rare Books collection in the research community. The fifty participants have chosen items they have consulted in the course of their work. The result is a fascinating variety of books, many of which have never been displayed.

    5.2 Call for Postgraduate Representative on Research Graduate School Committee

    The Research Graduate School Committee (RGSC) now has a vacancy for a research postgraduate representative from one of the following faculties: Art and Design, Arts, Business & Economics, Education or Law

    The RGSC is a university-wide body that is responsible for:

    • advising the Academic Board on all matters of policy relating to doctoral and the MPhil programs and research scholarships and awards
    • administering the university's doctorate (PhD, professional and higher doctorates) and MPhil programs, including admissions, variations to candidature, examinations, supervision and academic progress
    • administer all research scholarships and grants
    • approval of all HDR new research courses and units and amendments to existing programs.
    The postgraduate rep on this committee makes an important contribution to postgraduate research conditions at Monash.

    5.3 2  Days Intensive Programme for Research Students at Caulfield

    The TRIPLE E (Endeavour-Enrich-Excel) 2 day long research skills programme for HDR (Higher Degree Research) students at Caulfield Campus has been designed to assist you in reviewing any questions or issues that you may have from the total structure of conceptualising research to the tiny details of writing up a thesis. Students participating in this 2 day long programme will find that sharing views and issues within the group creates a better understanding of the research task and a feeling of greater confidence with the research materials and research writing.

    5.4 Online Forum for Postgraduates

    “Postgrad to Postgrad” is a new online forum set up by the Monash Postgraduate Association. Aside from the “lounge” (for general discussion), the main areas are set up by discipline with the idea of postgrads being able to talk to each other about their work, postdoc opportunities, info on overseas units etc.
