    1. exPERT Seminars and Workshops

    1.1 Research Supervisor Accreditation Program (Staff Only) – Level 2 – Master Classes at Gippsland - 2007

    The Gippsland Research Office is offering a series of DVD replay master classes for supervisors who have completed Level 1 of the accreditation program or who are already accredited as Level 2, but would like to refresh their skills.     1.2 Developing your own voice

    Writing a thesis is a very challenging task for both native speakers and non-native speakers of English. Many candidates experience particular difficulty with writing the literature review, especially with finding their own “voice” or stance. In this workshop, participants will work in small groups on extracts from academic writing in various disciplines. The focus of the workshop will be on how the research of others is reported and how points of view about that research are expressed. Notes and handouts will be provided.

    1.4 Intellectual Property MC4

    The Monash Research Graduate School, in association with Monash Research Commercialisation will run Introduction to Intellectual Property seminars throughout 2007 – approximately once a month. Lawyers from some of Melbourne’s best known legal firms with Intellectual Property expertise will also be in attendance. There is also a segment on Copyright. For supervisors, attendance at the Introduction to Intellectual Property seminar (Master Class 4) will be credited towards Level 2 in the Monash Research Supervision Accreditation Program.

    2.1 Open Day - Seminar

    Four students from various faculties, together with the Director and staff from the Monash Research Graduate School, will provide an informative and entertaining overview of postgraduate research study at Monash. Invite anyone you know who is thinking about enrolling in postgraduate study to come along and find out about the many benefits Monash can offer postgraduate research students.

    2.2 Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

    For students considering commencing Honours, PhD and MD projects in 2008. Information sessions include refreshments, tours of the labs and core facilities, and time to talk to current students and supervisors about available projects and student life at Peter Mac.

    3. Scholarships and Grants

    3.1 Postgraduate Publications Award

    Closing date: 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December each year

    The Postgraduate Publications Award is open to postgraduate research students who have submitted or are about to submit their thesis. The scheme provides support for students who wish to prepare some of their research for publication while they wait for their examination results.

    3.2 2008 General Sir John Monash Awards

    Closing date: 31st August 2007.

    The Awards are Australia’s equivalent to the prestigious Rhodes scholarship and the American Fulbright programme.

    The Awards offer up to $150,000 over three years for postgraduate studies (PhD, DPhil or professional Masters Degree) at any of the world’s best universities overseas.

    Only eight Awards are made each year to Australian citizens adjudged to have outstanding academic achievement, community consciousness and service and leadership potential of their field and the community. The Foundation expects Award winners to make a significant contribution to the future development of Australia.

    There is no restriction on the age of applicants or the fields of study. The average age of past winners is 26 and they have come from universities across Australia including from the fields of: Science; Engineering, Law, Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Social Studies, Medicine, Health, Philosophy, Arts and Music.

    3.3 Post-doctoral Fellowships and Post-graduate Scholarships for Corrosion Research at Departments of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Monash University

    TWO post-doctoral research fellowships and at least TWO post-graduate student scholarships are available, as a result of Discovery and Linkage grants of Australian Research Council (ARC) and Victorian State Govt Funding (ETIS Program). The research areas will include microbiological corrosion (particularly of concrete structures), corrosion mitigation of magnesium alloys and corrosion of nanocrystalline materials

    3.4 Summer Vacation Scholarship at Peter Mac 2007-08

    Closing date: 5:00pm, Wednesday 15 August 2007

    The Research Division at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Clinic invites applications for Cancer Research Summer Vacation Scholarships. These are for 6-8 weeks full-time and students receive excellent supervision, a real project to work on and a tax-free stipend of $200 per week.

    3.5 Gowrie Scholarship Trust Fund – Research Scholarship 2008

    Closing date: 3 October, 2007 (University is required to rank applications in order of merit).

    The Trustees offer annual Research Scholarships for research study, to graduates of Australian universities, or to other persons who have completed a course of tertiary education at other recognised institutions in Australia.

    In accordance with the Trust Deed, Gowrie Scholarships will be awarded to members of the Forces, and children of members of the Forces, including, at the direction of the Trustees, grandchildren or other lineal descendants of such members.

    The value of the scholarship is $4,000 per annum. Scholarships are awarded for a period of two years.

    3.6 The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law for 2008

    Closing date:
    31 August 2007 (late applications will not be accepted).

    The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust in London, with the support of the Australian government Department of Education, Science and Training, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Menzies Foundation, offers to Australian post-graduate students two scholarships in Law tenable in the United Kingdom commencing October 2008.

    The scholarship provides return fares and substantial emoluments which are subject to United Kingdom tax. It is tenable for one, two or three academic years.

    Academic excellence is of primary importance. The Selection Committee will seek individuals who are likely to attain prominence in Australia as demonstrated by their record of leadership, extra-curricular activities and interest in the service of others.

    3.7 Applications now open for the 2008 Fulbright Scholarships

    Valued at up to $A40,000, Fulbright scholarships are open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States for 3 – 12 months. Scholarships can be started between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009.

    As the largest and one of the most prestigious educational scholarship programs in the world, Fulbright provides unique opportunities for Australians to build long term research collaboration and linkages with U.S. universities.

    Applications are open to Postgraduates (to do research related to their Australian PhD or to enrol in a U.S. degree); Postdoctoral, Professional and Senior Scholars from any field of study. Applicants from Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia are encouraged to consider the new state specific Fulbright Scholarships that have now been established.

    3.8 Rebecca L. Cooper Medical Research Foundation Limited PhD Scholarship 2008

    The Rebecca L. Cooper Medical Research Foundation is offering a scholarship, to commence in 2008, for young science and medical graduates. The scholarship will be granted for the undertaking of a thesis study in the medical applications of Genetic Research at a recognised Australian University. The Scholarship is intended to support basic and clinical research training within Australian research units and as a precursor to more advanced study in Australia and/or overseas.

    The scholarship will be granted for one year and be renewable for three years depending on satisfactory progress. Applicants should be about to commence their PhD or be in their first year.
    Applications should include a 2-3 page summary of their research proposal, their CV, as well as a letter from their proposed supervisor and one other referee.

    Applicants will be advised of their success or otherwise by the end of September 2007.

    Foundation Grants in 2008

    Closing date:
    Friday 5 October 2007

    In 2008, research grants will be available for research in the fields of brain sciences, diabetes, geriatrics, lung diseases (excluding cancer) rheumatology, vision sciences and in the medical application of genetic research.

    The value of the grants is between $8,000 and $20,000. These limits will be strictly adhered to and the grant will be preferably, but not exclusively, for specific equipment. A commitment for continued support cannot be given.

    3.9 Postgraduate Travel Grant

    Postgraduate travel grants assist students who wish to attend conferences in order to present a paper or poster on their current research.

    Students undertaking postgraduate research programs at Monash are strongly encouraged to present their research findings at national and international conferences. This allows them to expose their work to peer review and to develop networks that will be important in their subsequent research careers.

    Postgraduate travel grants are also available for students:
    • To undertake field trips, surveys, data collection or interviews;
    • To learn new techniques
    • To pursue research in specialist archive collections; or
    • To utilise specialist equipment not available at Monash University

    3.10 Monash Access Equity Postgraduate Research Travel Grant

    As part of its equity program, Monash University has made available up to 30 special travel grants for 2007, each up to a value of $3000 (depending upon destination and associated costs) for travel within Australia and overseas. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for these grants.

    Equity selection criteria that may affect a candidate’s ability to undertake a period of essential study away, to undertake fieldwork or to attend a research conference may include, for example:
    • A disability or long-term medical condition
    • Socio-economic disadvantage and/or
    • Adverse long-term family or domestic circumstances

    3.11 Foundation for Rabbit Free Australia: Postgraduate Research Grant 2008

    Invitation to Apply

    The Foundation for Rabbit-Free Australia (RFA) was established in 1990 to support rabbit research and to promote community awareness of the rabbit problem. Through RFA, concerned people can donate money directly to research. The Foundation has funded some small regional projects and also seeks to broker larger research opportunities.

    The Foundation invites grant applications from students in agricultural science, natural resource management, agricultural economics or social science who are currently enrolled in approved Masters or Doctorate degrees with research that relates to the management and control of feral rabbits or to the species or ecosystems that are affected by feral rabbits.

    Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis and may provide up to $5000 to support:
    • overseas travel for a study tour; OR
    • attending and presenting research results at a relevant international or national conference; OR
    • a visit by an eminent overseas scientist, working on rabbits or in a related field, to Australia to mentor the student and address Australian and/or regional conferences; OR
    • the purchase of essential equipment required for the post-graduate, rabbit-related research and development project.

    The Grant is open to Australian citizens or students that have been continuously resident in Australia for two years immediately preceding the closing date for applications. Applicants must be currently enrolled Masters or PhD students.

    Applications for grants to be awarded in 2008 are due by close of business Friday 26th October 2007 and the successful applicant will be announced in December 2007.

    3.12 King’s College London/Monash Travel Grants 2007

    Closing date:
    30 September 2007 for travel to KCL in 2008

    Eligibility: You are eligible if you are a postgraduate research student at Monash or an early career researcher at Monash.

    The KCL/Monash travel award is for up to GBP £2000 for up to 3 months stay at KCL

    3.13 The Nancy Millis Young Postgraduate Award for graduates - $21,000

    This Award will be presented to an outstanding graduate in agriculture, biology, natural resource management, earth sciences, environmental science or a related field, who is able to register for a PhD program at a Victorian university.

    The Royal Society of New South Wales

    4.1 The Clarke Medal 2007

    This year’s award is in the field of Geology in all its aspects, and nominations are called for the names of suitable persons who have contributed significantly to the science of Geology.

    4.2 The Edgeworth David Medal 2007

    The Edgeworth David Medal is awarded for distinguished contributions by a young scientist. The conditions of the award of the Medal are:
    • The recipient must be under the age of thirty-five years at 1st January 2007;
    • The award will be for work done mainly in Australia or its Territories, or, contributing to the advancement of Australian science.

    4.3 The Walter Burfitt Prize 2007

    Closing date: 30 September 2007


    The Walter Burfitt Prize is awarded at intervals of three years to the worker in pure or applied science, resident in Australia or New Zealand, whose papers and other contributions published during the past six years are deemed to be of the highest scientific merit, account being taken only of investigations described for the first time, and carried out by the author mainly in these countries.

    5. Other Forthcoming Events

    5.1 Driver Simulator Study – Drivers Needed

    Research is being conducted using the Monash University Accident Research Centre’s Driving Simulator which is located on the Clayton campus of Monash University.

    Drivers are needed who:
    - are aged between 30 and 50 years
    - hold a full car driver’s licence
    - have been driving for at least 10 years, and
    - have NO history of epilepsy or motion sickness

    Participants will be paid for their participation.
